Animal fibers

Yaks, or ‘Bos grunniens’, are bovines prized for lean meat and high-quality khullu fiber or yak down. Native to Central Asia and domesticated around 10,000 years ago, these hardy animals flourish in cold, high-altitude climates. They have selective feeding habits and produce odorless manure. While there are ethical considerations due to their diminishing habitats, yak products are seeing a rise in market interest, appealing for their sustainable designation and luxury status. Proper care includes seasonal raking of down, shelter provisions, and vaccination against common diseases. Yak fiber characteristics make it a hypoallergenic and less static luxury fiber, suitable for high-quality textiles.
